FDL County Highway Commission Policies

Highway Construction Policy

Please be aware that PUSHING SNOW OR OTHER MATERIALS ONTO OR ACROSS HIGHWAYS IS ILLEGAL. Performing these activities can lead to accidents resulting in property damage, bodily injury, and even death. These activities are prohibited by WI State Law Statutes 86.01, 86.07(2), 346.94(5), and 941.01. Please follow these statutes in order to avoid penalty and liability, and to help keep highway travel safe for everyone. The life you save may be your own. The State Patrol and County Sheriff's Department will be working with the Highway Department to enforce this law.

 

Mailbox Policy

This policy is to address mailbox installation within the FDL County Highway right-of-way and any damage claim by the owner of the mail box as a result of Highway Department Operations. Please be aware that mailboxes within FDL County right-of-way shall be installed with their posts or bases a minimum of 2 feet back from the edge of the existing shoulder of the road. The box shall be located 46" above the grade of the shoulder with the front of the box when opened not extending onto the back of the shoulder of the road. The mailbox and post installed should be able to withstand the force of flying snow and slush from traffic and snow removal operations. Any claim of damage from Highway Department Operations will be investigated by Highway Department Staff. If a mailbox or receptacle base is damaged by flying snow or is not placed at the proper distance and height from the roadway it will not be replaced by the Highway Department. If a mail box is hit and damaged by Highway Department equipment and can not be fixed, it will be replaced with a metal or plastic box acceptable to the U.S. Postal Service. Decorative or other types of ornamental mailboxes will not be replaced in kind.
